Artist Statement

Growing up in Europe, I was exposed to working with fabrics and threads from childhood. My fascination with manipulating fibres has continued throughout my life in Canada. In 1997, I enrolled in my first creative studies course with London City & Guilds and have since completed diplomas in embroidery, patchwork, quilting and  design.

I take my inspiration from the environment, both natural and man-made, and develop the ideas on paper and with fabrics through hands-on sampling.  I focus on combining techniques and media in original, one-of-a-kind pieces, with an emphasis on dimensionality. I continually experiment to find new ways to add the third dimension to fabric and  paper.

Teaching has been an important part of my life and while I am now a full-time artist who exhibits on a regular basis,  I love to share my knowledge and experience in workshops and courses in national and international venues.

Finding My Way
31" x 31"- © 2005 - $ 1023.00

This piece is a continuation in my series of “connecting” individual compositions to create a larger abstract hanging. I am always experimenting with hand-dyed fabrics to showcase colour, pattern, line, texture and form in an interesting manner. “Finding My Way” lets the eye follow a number of paths while at the same time allows the viewer to appreciate the overall image.

Windows of Opportunity
42.5" x 61"- © 2004 - $2,595.00

When I first arrived in Calgary in 1980 from a small mountain village in Bavaria, I was fascinated by the tall buildings and shiny windows. To this day I view these as windows filled with opportunities and promises for those that are willing to take the extra step. This large 3-D hanging is my tribute to my chosen hometown. This was one of two pieces to represent Alberta at the National Art Centre in Ottawa, Canada to commemorate our Centennial in 2005.

Cotton, polyester sheer, Timtex, machine pieced and appliqué,  machine quilted, copper wire, Lucite rod

Flying Solo

This quilt provided the title for my first solo exhibition at the La Conner Quilt Museum, Washington, USA. It  was created at the end of my City & Guilds Patchwork and Quilting Certificate after I had fulfilled the objectives of the course. I was "flying solo" for the first time!

Hand-dyed cotton, acrylic paint, machine pieced and appliqué,
hand and machine embellished, beads, copper wire and pipe.
