Artist Statement

Fibre Artist & teacher
, Carol Seeley's work depicts the places in her life, real and imagined. From the coastal scenes of her home to the imaginings that take her to far away places amongst the stars. Many of her pieces are a symbol of that desire within all of us to be free, to explore the infinite spaces of our minds.

Carol enjoys fibre as a medium because it’s soft, flexible, forgiving yet versatile. She uses extensive quilting & embellishment in her work to create depth and texture to entice the viewer into the surface. She enjoys combining textiles with other mediums such as paint, beading, ribbon, yarn and found objects.

Carol’s work has been exhibited in galleries in North America and Europe . Her work has been juried into Quilt Canada , The World Quilt Competition and the Pacific Northwest Quilt Festival. She has been a prize winner at the 2005 and 2006 Grand National Quilt Show, the 2006 Gibson’s Landing Fibrearts Symposium, and the 2007 Campbell River Public Art Galleries Members Show.

Award-winning orca whale quilt, "Echoes", by Carol Seeley

'Echoes’

‘Echoes’ of our summer sailing experiences. Silently passing through the waters of the inner coastal passages one can hear the echoes of the Orca as they breach the ocean’s surface to take a breath. Inspired by a photograph I took the first time I experienced these magnificence creatures in the wild. As they playfully moved through the water I was and still am awed by their peaceful splendor.

"Balancing Act", a quilt by Carol Seeley

‘Balancing Act’

12” x 14” 2005 - $125

Seeley, Balancing Act detail.jpg (70624 bytes)   Click photo see detail

Life can be a balancing act between the rigid structure of the daily routine and the flow of one’s growth and development along one’s chosen path. The circles are a symbol of the continuity of life, and ever changing but in essence repeating over and over again. The squares are a symbol of the daily routine and the curved lines represent one’s chosen paths.

Hand appliquéd, machine quilted, cotton, toile, yarn, 3D forms and beads.

A favourite spot for picking oysters. Desolation Sound , BC

"Starry Night", a star-filled quilt by Carol Seeley

Starry Night
56" x 56" x 56" - $825.00

The central motif was made just for the fun of it. I let the strong triangular feel of the centre star determine the actual shape of the quilt, carrying the colours out to the quilt’s corners with foundation pieced wedges. And finally, embellishing a galaxy of stars and planets using thread appliques and netting.

Accepted Quilt Canada 1999, Harris Gallery, Charlottetown, PEI.  Machine pieced and quilted.
