Artist Statement

I am a mountain and nature lover…and that is what shows up in my art quilts.

The first course that I took in landscape quilts was when I discovered my niche in the quilting world. I found a way to express my love of nature in cloth with colors, textures, and fabrics, and with no holds on methods!

I am having a great time in this journey of becoming a quilt artist. No two quilts are the same, there is always a new technique being discovered or used in each new piece. The end is always a surprise.  Sometimes it takes quite a while to figure out how to get the effect that I want and sometimes the answer comes in the strangest places.

This is exciting! After a lifetime of being a student and a teacher, it is breathtaking to realize that this newfound life of mine is real. No bells or prescribed holidays any more, just more exciting ideas to develop and create and more creative courses and books to devour. Lately, my greatest joys have come from teaching; the circle never ends.

Just One More Second

26″x 22 - © 2005 - $165.00

“Just One More Second” was made to commemorate Albert’s Centennial.  The image was chosen by the Calgary Stampede, an organization that I have volunteered in for 25 years. The horse is appliquéd onto the hand painted background while the rest of the design done in thread painting.

Ode to Sunflowers
27″x 43″- © 2005 - $350.00

“Ode to Sunflowers” is the first piece that I constructed after taking a fabric painting course with Phil Beaver. I feel great joy and freedom watching these sunflowers strutting their stuff around!

Peggy's Cove

20”x 114 - © 2005 - NFS

“Peggy’s Cove” is done from a picture of this magical Canadian shore in Nova Scotia. I used several layers of sheers, tulles, netting, cheesecloth, plastic, Angelina, metalics, beads over hand painted background, rocks and water to create this action. There are also layers of paint sticks and watercolor pencils in areas of the piece.

Fire
13.5”x 18.5” - © 2005 - NFS

“Fire, Fire Everywhere” is an exploration of color, depth and translucency. I used many layers of sheers, angelina, sparkles, even a couple of cottons and hand dyes to create this piece. It is quilted without batting further enhancing the translucency.
