Artist Statement

Nature is my inspiration with its ever changing palette and its complexity of color. Environmental concerns haunt me - global warming, dwindling fish stalks and bird populations, the depletion of rain forests along with all the plants and creatures. Spirituality and the ethereal intertwine with nature and its concerns to become part of my creative spirit.

My passion for fibre has returned me to the world of art. Art education was one of my specialties in university and was virtually left behind as I  pursued my teaching career. Now, I am assisting others to find their creative voice.

Working with fabric, threads, beads, dye, paint and other surface design techniques adjusts my spirit into a more positive and joyous place. My quilts are characterized by elaborate machine quilting and are enhanced with a medley of beads or other embellishments. The quilts' vibrant colors are complimented with distinctive textured lines. Planned with forethought,  completed spontaneously, my work reflects nature and spirit dancing together.

Tulips for Mom (diptych)
16" x 20" and 12" x 12"- © 2004 - $450.00 and $300.00

I was invited to participate in a mixed media exhibit titled “Media is the Medium” at the local art gallery. Inspiration came from the ads and articles about Mother’s Day. The center panels are dye painted. The very close machine quilting reflects nature, sun, spirals and mandalas.

The chiffon feathers show the delicate frailty of nature. The tight machine stitching reflects feathers and mandalas.

Nature - The Gift
23" x 22"- © 2005 - $575.00

When designing Nature – The Gift, I wanted to use the traditional idea of quilting blocks, but tweak them. I changed the shapes and usual placement of blocks along with using intense colors. The leaves where couched with bright yarns. The beads add further sparkle on the wrapping of the gift.

The Spell of the Poppies
22" x 26"- © 2005 - $595.00

Poppies, from fresh young buds to aging seed pods, hold a certain allure which captures my mind and my soul. This is one of several quilts containing images of poppies. This reverse appliquéd piece has painted highlights on the background. Watercolor pencil adds shading and depth to these
