Artist Statement

Emilie always has had many creative hobbies and interests. Since the first quilting class in 1985, she has taken many courses with gifted quilt artists and has learned something from each of them.

Other artists’ work, nature, flowers, color, photographs, and fabric are her inspiration. She uses a variety of methods and materials to express her ideas.

In her quilts, Emilie strives to express the beauty of  nature, and to give herself and the viewer the joy, pleasure, and tranquility that is inherent in all things beautiful. A major piece takes her a year to complete.

Emilie is an internationally recognized quilt artist. Her quilt In Praise of Poppies was chosen as one of the ‘100 Best American Quilts of the 20th Century’. Many of Emilie’s quilts were published in magazines and books.

Swirling Leaves

27" x 35" - NFS - © 2002

Swirling Leaves is a celebration of one of nature’s glorious seasons – the autumn. The intuitive process in creating this was a new learning experience for me. The pieced large leaf for the background, bars, appliquéd leaves, netting, wind ribbon bands, couched ribbons, more leaves, glue and foil, and beads, each a separate layer, comprise the creation of the quilt top. Machine work; cotton, polyester, silk, netting, satins. Wind bands inspired by Libby Lehman’s technique.

Wild Geese Calling
65" x 51" - $4,500.00 US - © 1997

With the fall migration approaching, the arrow formations of flying geese come to temporary rest, calling others to join them, taking off to the skies and disappearing over the horizons. In the sky Escher-like tessellations of geese interlock while realistic geese feed and frolic on the shores of the lake. The wings of the geese are loose and real feathers can be found on the beach.

Lagoon of Scarlet Plumage

45" x 47" - NFS - © 2003

Flamingoes gather in lagoons to feed on shrimp and microscopic organisms, filtered through a highly specialized beak held upside-down. Flamingoes are very timid and take flight at the slightest disturbance: an alert call provokes a storm of black and red feathers as they fly away, honking loudly. A variety of machine appliqué techniques, 3-D leaves, photo transfers; cotton, silk, polyester, velvet, and novelty fabrics; machine quilted.

Golden Chanterelles
24" x 24" - NFS - ©2002

In an awareness of a different perspective of the world around me, I tried to acknowledge the beauty of the minute, unobtrusive, and plain, often overlooked in the rush of our everyday pursuits. In my youth my grandfather and I would browse in the mixed forests collecting edible mushrooms for fresh eating and drying. Cottons, polyesters, fabric dyes, crayons, embroidered, machine quilted.
