Artist Statement

In her work, Gail plays with the fabric of the landscape, molding it to her own vision and mood. Her training and experience in home economics and photography have provided a base and a union of technical skills and aesthetic sensibilities.

Gail has taught quiltmaking across North America and in Australia. Her quilts have won local, national and international awards in juried exhibitions since 1989, as much for their unique vision and emotional appeal as for their evidence of mastery of unusual and invented techniques.

In 1996, Gail published "Quiltworks Across Canada: Eleven Contemporary Workshops", and in 2003 was awarded the Canadian Quilters' Association's highest award for her contributions to quiltmaking in Canada.

Gail's quilts reflect her pride in Canada, her attachment to family, her teasing of the often rigid quilting conventions, and her exploration of her own little place in the big world.

A Piece on Canada

52' x 55" - © 1993 - $2,450

1993 was the year of Meech Lake, when many Canadians feared that Québec would take itself out of the constitution. This piece/peace suggests that each part of the country is important to the whole.

Hand and machine appliquéd, machine quilted, blueprinting, painting.

The Back Burner
36 x 36" - © 2001 - $1,450

I began art making after all four of my children were born. Income producing work has to be done while parenting, homemaking, maintaining a relationship, and volunteering (each represented by a traditional block behind the stove "elements"), all of which leave art making on the back burner. Soul feeding must come last in the food chain.

Painting, foiling, machine pieced, appliquéd and quilted.

Ornamental Crab in Four Parts
each 24" x 24"  - © 2003 - $1,600

I am fortunate to live in an area of British Columbia that has four distinct seasons. Whenever I walk to my studio, I see this hardy tree in all its splendor. Even in winter, the rich burgundy fruit hangs on the branches in stark contrast to the subtly-hued whites and greys around it.

Machine pieced, appliquéd and quilted

Canadian Series III
The Yukon: Robert Service Cabin

38" x 47" - © 2000 - $1,950

In my continuing series of pieces to represent each province and territory, I have sought out and photographed a landmark or architectural mark that typifies each.

Hand and machine pieced, hand and machine quilted, hand and machine appliquéd, confetti technique, dyeing, foiling and transfer printing.
