Artist Statement
I have been working in fibers and fabrics since 1965,
focusing on quilting for the past 25 years. Traditional or contemporary,
realistic or representational, my quilts are inspired by nature,
particularly my garden, and the landscape of the North in all its seasons.
Fabrics entice me. Colours, lines, shapes, patterns
and textures become food for artistic expression. My chocolate!
Inspiration may come from fabric, a photograph of the
garden or landscape, exciting quilt artists who share their expertise in
workshops or books, or a ‘challenge’ set by a friend, guild, or quilt
shop. Challenges encourage stretching my imagination, the use of new
techniques, and tempt me to play with pattern in new ways and to explore
new forms of expression.
Currently I strive to shed restraints learned in the
traditional construction techniques of a Home Economics background to
enable a more liberated approach and spontaneity to design.

Fall Fireweed
30"
x 46.5"- © 1998 - NFS
This quilt was inspired by a photo of the brilliant
fall colours around a friend’s home. Watercolour technique was used for
the background. Because colour was the main objective, the fabrics
include a wide range of subjects, many a delightful surprise when they
are discovered.
Cotton fabrics, machine piecing, confetti, machine appliqué, raw
edge appliqué and machine quilting.

The Rose and The Bee
40" x 48"
- © 2001 - $ 1,550.00 Cdn
Crazy patch, machine embellishment, and insects,
birds or fish were all part of the challenge requirements for this
quilt. Raw edge appliqué was the challenge for myself. I particularly
enjoyed making the bee’s wings and ‘finding’ in my stash just the right
fabrics for their bodies.
Cotton, nylon netting, synthetic plush, wool, machine piecing, machine appliqué, machine
and hand embroidery, machine quilting.

Twilight in the Garden
32" x 28.5"
- © 2003 - $ 730.00 Cdn
The garden is always a great source of inspiration
for my quilts. Such a variety of colours, shapes and textures!
Evening light captures and emphasizes plants differently and provides
another view of the garden. Influenced by Jane Sassaman’s work, this quilt
provided an opportunity to explore new techniques in construction and
style of expression.
Cotton fabrics, machine appliqué, Broderie Perse
and machine quilting.

Weedeater Working
40.25"
x 54.25"
- © 2004 - $1,723.00 Cdn
An avid gardener, I often wish someone would
magically appear and tend to the never-ending weeds. My fantasy
weedeater was inspired by a cartoon of a bookworm……now if I only had my
own weedeater to selectively eat its way through the garden!
Cotton, silk, rayon, polyester and blends, ‘silk’
artificial flowers, machine appliqué, machine quilting.
