Artist Statement

Being inspired by nature and excited by colour are often starting points for
my creative process.  The design evolves and unfolds as I  work. In this way, I am involved in creative decision-making throughout the entire design process.

The freedom and joyfulness of playing with paint on fabric and discharge printing in my backyard each summer is a highlight for me. It is particularly satisfying to use cloth of my own hand in my artwork.

Learning is important to me. I believe that teaching and learning are on the
same continuum and it is the flow back and forth between the two that
appeals to me. Currently, I teach colour theory and design classes. I also
work as an educator at the Edmonton Art Gallery where I enjoy being in dialogue about artwork with gallery visitors.

I am delighted to be teaching at the Quilt Canada conference in Ottawa in May 2006 as well as judging the National Juried Show.

Off the Wall
        66"  x 18 "x 60" - © 2005 - NFS

Off The Wall weaves together the many threads that were my process and experiences as part of a year long exploration entitled "Inside The Dress". I  followed my love of altering fabrics using textile paint and a bleach discharge process. Parts of my inner person are revealed in the colours and imagery of the cloth I created and the piecing together of the materials.

Hand painted, dyed and discharged cotton fabric, cotton and rayon threads, chicken wire, yarn, oil pastel, recycled bits and pieces,  machine pieced and quilted, hand stitched and quilted

Reaching Out
6" x 12" x 2" - © 2005 - NFS

As a way to explore working in 3D with fabric, I signed up for a doll making workshop with Margi Hennen. This soft sculpture is inspired by that workshop. One of the exercises for "Inside the Dress" stated: create a self portrait that includes what you perceive as your 'flaws'.  This is it.

Discharged cotton fabric, cotton thread, safety pins, telephone wire, buttons, painted cheesecloth, pigma pen

Amish Peacock
42" x 32" - © 2002 - $850.00

Amish peacock was created in response to a challenge to give voice to cloth by translating a literary work into quilt art. It is inspired by Just Plain Fancy, a children's book by Patricia Polacco.

Cotton fabric, cotton, rayon & metallic thread, pieced and appliquéd by machine, hand and machine quilting

Landscape Elements
18 1/4" x 29 1/2" - © 2000 - $450.00

The juxtaposition of the vertical and horizontal curved lines has a real landscape feel to it. The linear design has a quiet strength when viewed from across the room while the variety of textures in the surface design keep it interesting for the close-up view.

Textile paint, acrylic and chalk on canvas, hand painted, cotton fabrics, suede trim, machine pieced and quilted, hand embroidered and beaded
