Artist Statement

I work full-time for Manitoba Advanced Education and Training where I am passionately dedicated to providing adult literacy, prior learning assessment and workplace training programs.  I am also a part-time student in Fine Arts, constantly expanding my art offerings.

I am a fabric artist, watercolour and acrylic painter, assemblage artist, writer, creativity coach and adult educator who dreams of the day when I can engage in each endeavor in equal measure.

In all areas of my artwork, I consider myself to be a colorist focused on the interpretation of nature and life in all its richness.  It’s all about colour, texture and layers for me.

I am also a humorist writer intent on capturing the bittersweet depths of the human character.  In addition to speaking and lecturing, I am published in magazines and journals.

I approach every arena with intense and full creativity.

Interactive 1
29.5" x 31.5" - © 1998 - Collection of the Artist

This is the first of a series of two-layered quilts. I was working professionally at the time developing training materials, some of which were multimedia.  I asked myself how could I create an interactive quilt, with which the viewer could directly interface.  Thus was born the interactive series.  Also at this time,  I had a brush with melanoma which caused me to reflect deeply on my artistic endeavors and to take a step into a new arena – this quilt was that step.  The top embellished piece lifts to reveal a second quilt underneath with a black and white embroidered flower.  This quilt has won several awards in the Contemporary category.

Interactive 2
50" x 47" - © 2002 - Collection of the Artist

This is the latest in the two-layered series. The top quilt lifts to reveal a sunflower underneath shaped like a setting sun sitting on a horizon.  The black background is heavily stitched to signify a richly textured and rolling landscape.  This quilt won Judges’ Choice from two judges in a quilt show.

Interactive 3
40" x 30" -
© 2000 - Private Collection

Interactive 3 has a series of doors around the border which open to reveal images of animals created from potato cut stamps.  The white background is actually hundreds of little beige and grey squares pieced using a jacquard technique.

…..and Baby Makes Three
27.5" x 23" - © 2002 - Collection of the Artist

This is a piece I call a fabric birthday card.  It was made for a friend for her 40th birthday, the morning of which she miscarried a greatly desired baby and all birthday celebrations were cancelled.  The quilt still resides with me.  It is truly a representation of how bittersweet life can be.
