Artist Statement

Quilting is Art, complex and intriguing!

Nature is my mentor, with its beauty and mystery.

I started sewing when old enough to reach the treadle on my  grandmother’s abandoned machine. My first quilt was traditional; now my quilts are my own designs. They often lead me, taking on a life of their own.

For as long as I can remember, I have been on a journey in the wonderland of creativity; colour and line fascinate me.

Recently, a friend introduced me to painting on cloth.  My love of watercolor painting came flowing back. Now I paint images on cloth with dye and enhance them with contour quilting. I explore both painting and quilting in one project.

My background includes a Home Economics degree with a major in textiles and design. Later, I painted with water colours, taking courses with the Federation of Canadian Artists. I have taught sewing and quilting at High School, Continuing Education as well as at provincial Home Economics conferences. Now retired, I lecture and teach workshops … when I’m not playing in the studio!

Vivian Kapusta's quilted scene of Pitt Meadows, Fraser Valley, BC

Autumn Scarlet
5’x4’ - © 2007 - NFS

An autumn scene: Pitt Meadows in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia.

Blueberry bushes dressed in October Scarlet, with the smoky Golden Ears Mountains in the background – a breathtaking view. My aim was to freeze this image in time.

Techniques: the sky and mountains are my hand dyed fabric, the remaining fabrics are commercial; cut edge appliqué and free motion embroidery completes the quilt.

Autumn Scarlet was shown in the Canadian National Juried show 2007 and will travel with the Mancuso World Quilt Show 2007.

Brilliantly-colored phoenix stiched in fabric by Vivian Kapusta

Phoenix Rising
30”x30” - © 2006 - NFS

The Phoenix is a mythical bird who rises from the flames to be reborn. In China , it represents the power of the Empress.

My interpretation of the Phoenix Rising is the rise of Fibre Art from the foundation of our foremother’s sewing skills.

Techniques: raw edge appliqué with free motion machine quilting.

Deer and racoons on Salt Spring Island Shore in quilt by Vivian Kapusta

A View from Saltspring Island
24” x 20” - © 2002 - NFS

What can be better than a spring morning, with mist on the distant islands and animals on the beach? Looking out the window - this is my memory of a wonderful get-a-way.

Construction: Raw edge appliqué with bleach discharge of some fabrics.

Peace and serenity depicted in quilt

Seeking Serenity
40” x 50” - © 2003 - NFS

This wall quilt was a finalist in the group category of the 2004 Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters Show. The center square reflects my desire to find peace and serenity in nature. The additional work: the round with Japanese fabrics and crane by Laura Koch; cherry tree by Judy Greenwood; mahogany panel by Bonnie Dillon; and the green border with the bamboo by Karen Stefiuk.

Our small group agreed to work in Round Robin style and follow the theme started by the center block. With the exception of a little piecing with the Japanese fabrics, the wall quilt was made with raw edge appliqué.
