About Sharon Rubuliak
The look and feel of textiles have enthralled me since childhood when I first learned to sew. I am intrigued by the myriad possibilities for manipulation and transformation and by the variety and richness of expression in fibres and needlework around the world. I feel that fibre serves to enhance the stories of ‘everywoman’ that underlie much of my work; it also provides a familiar medium for connecting with viewers.
I design and create artwork from traditional and non-traditional fibres and mixed media, combining commercial and hand-dyed or hand-painted fabrics and threads. I use quilting lines to add surface texture and to emphasize movement. To interpret and reinforce ideas I use a variety of techniques such as layering and embellishing with decorative thread, stamping, beading and found objects or recycled materials.
I work out ideas in notes and sketches and then select materials and techniques that emphasize or complement the ideas. Occasionally, when ideas are undefined I simply start with fabric, gathering colours or textures that appeal and working with simple shapes, allowing the composition to evolve through successive rounds of layering, cutting and sewing.
My work is inspired by personal experience and everyday events such as physical and social activities, the natural environment, or the news. I also find inspiration in fibre works of other cultures and traditions.
I create to please myself, to explore design and technique, to transform ideas into visual works that invite the viewer to reflect, to smile, to see something of themselves or simply to enjoy the play of colour, line, shape and texture. Through my artwork I feel a connection to women around the world who express their creativity with needle and thread.
