My interest in the history of rust led me back 3.5 billion years to the activity in the sea, seabed, ocean and atmosphere. Over a period of 2.7 billion years sea water and air were cleared of iron, and banded iron was deposited on the sea bed. The atmosphere was oxygenated, and an ozone layer was formed as protection from the extreme heat of the sun. What struck me was how the physical elements worked together to make the world ready to support more complex life forms.
