About Donna Polos
Twelve years ago I was a frustrated beginning watercolour painter. I would practice... practice... practice... and see little growth. To ease the frustration, I would quilt. I had been a quiltmaker for fifteen years and had worked with textiles in many forms since childhood. Fabric was a medium I was comfortable with.
As time passed, I started to ask a lot of "what ifs". What if I applied watercolour technique to cloth? Surprising, through experimentation, I discovered much of the technique worked. I played with dye painting, surface design, fabric painting, stenciling, heliographic painting, resists, negative painting, underpainting, glazing, paint pouring, monoprinting on sandpaper, chalk pastels and recently metallic threads and yarns sewn on the surface.
As my fabric painting has developed, so has my watercolour on paper. I usually paint fabric and paper simultaneously side by side. As I have developed as an artist, my two mediums have become one.
