Lagoon of Scarlet Plumage
45" x 47"   © 2003

Flamingos gather in lagoons to feed on shrimp and microscopic organisms, filtered through a highly specialized beak held upside-down. Flamingos are very timid and take flight at the slightest disturbance: an alert call provokes a storm of black and red feathers as they fly away, honking loudly. A variety of machine appliqué techniques, 3-D leaves, photo transfers; cotton, silk, polyester, velvet, and novelty fabrics; machine quilted.
