This quilt is one of a series based on a theme about icons and shrines both ancient and contemporary. In Canada, roadside shrines were usually associated with religious figures and Catholicism. In the last 25 years, shrines along the roadside and in public spaces have become commonplace in all regions of Canada. Contemporary shrines mark areas where accidents and violent crimes have occurred, and are comprised of photos, markers, candles and flowers. They are less associated with religious beliefs and can be either personal in nature or a venue for the public to support others and express their grief.
