Two million years ago, the sun set on an inland sea in the center of North America. Today the sun sets behind the Rocky Mountains and the waves of land that form the Alberta Foothills. Plate Tectonic Theory outlines a process of convection deep in the earth, with sufficient pressure to move the Pacific and Juan de Fuca tectonic plates on a journey eastward, causing the layers of rock in the North American Continent to fold and break, pushing up towering mountains and rolling foothills.
