Living Skies-Dying Dreams by Zelma Hurd

Saskatchewan’s license plates advertise the province as the “Land of Living Skies”. The skies are often very colorful and alive, and part of the reason we love living here. I have a rural background and remember my grandfather often referring to the family farm as being “held together with binder twine and barbed wire”. Farmers and livestock producers have long survived the ups and down presented by Mother Nature, and while the “binder twine” holds the land together in a fragile way, is the barbed wire protecting the livestock industry or fencing it in to the point where they are no longer able to make a living?
