Ferns are ancient plants. Alberta was historically an inland sea. Alberta’s economy is based on rich deposits of fossil fuels.
When I chose the two hand painted fern fabrics, they seemed similar. As I worked on this piece, I discovered the contrasts: dark rich colours and fiery orange; solitary ferns and clusters; delicate organic shapes and the rigid rectangle format grid. How similar to life: full of juxtapositions and contrasts – yet stitched together to make a whole.
Techniques: hand painted and sun printed fabrics
