Onions and Garlic by Betty Howe
23" x 28½"   © 2005

I grew up on a dairy/fruit farm in the Creston Valley in south eastern BC. So when The Shape of Things to Come was suggested, my first reaction, like any farmer, was next year’s harvest. After thinking about it though I realized it’s not as simple as it used to be.

I have made this piece in response to the controversy over maintaining the genetic pool of seeds for the foods we eat. I chose onions and garlic because I love the look and shape of their seed pods. In the future, will they be bigger, better or perhaps even less healthy? Whatever happens, altered or not, seeds are always about the future.

Cottons, chiffon, fusible web, machine reverse appliqué, and machine quilted
