Rose Hip Study No. 6
15" x 18" ©2011
This study of a dead rose hip is dedicated to depicting the thorns, which stop animals and humans from getting too close to the wild rose, so it can grow to its full potential.
Light, airy colours, with the promise of Spring, make up this background and help keep the focus on the rose hip and thorny stem. The rose hip and thorns are painted in their natural browns. While the Tyvek for the rose hip was heated and wrinkled, the stems were not, and have smooth shiny spikes. The quilting in this piece accents the shapes of the calyxes that flow down from the dead rose hip, rendering them the final focal point of the composition.
