About Kathryn Davies
Biography
Kathryn Davies is a contemporary mixed media artist whose work is inspired by nature, the imagery of the everyday and her environment. Sometimes bold and graphic, other times subtle and calm there is always a dialogue with the materials she uses that creates a unique visual vocabulary.
Using textiles, fibre, paint, stitch and found materials she uses processes that leave room for accidental and chance effects. She has developed her art practice through informal and independent study which has brought about connections in her work that invite the viewer to look more closely.
Kathryn works from her studio in Langley, British Columbia.
Artist Statement
Textiles, fibre and paint have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. The urge to design and create has led me to experiment with many different art forms that I enjoy blending together in my mixed media art. My work is abstract and I like to use shapes, colours, marks and textures to create a mood or hint at a realistic place or object.
I often add textiles or stitch to my pieces and have recently started adding found items, metal and repurposed fabric. Painting these fabrics allows me to create the foundation pieces for marking, stenciling and stitching. Sometimes textiles are combined with paper to create three dimensional works. Nothing is off limits and I am always delighted when I discover a new way to use something I already have in my studio.
