This piece is unique in that it evolved from a black and white photo of a garden party taken probably in the 1920’s. The part of the photo that fascinated me the most was all the hats worn by the women, so they became the focus of the design. The one woman, wearing the trench coat and the beret, seems quite daring in comparison to the rest of the “ladies”. The faces were less important than the hats, but still convey a lot of character through the use of hand-dyed and batik fabrics. These women appear to belong to that era when women were called ladies and thus the name of the piece – The Ladies.Primarily cotton fabrics, but also some silk and upholstery fabrics. Machine embroidered appliqués. Rayon and invisible thread were used for the quilting.
