About Leah Gravells

Leah Gravells Leah Gravells, fibre artist, resides in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada with her family. Her fibre art interest has led her to recently peruse a certificate in Visual Art and Design at the University of Alberta. She continues to work with fibre art and finds tremendous satisfaction in selecting fabrics and completing the construction process for each piece. Leah’s fibre art has won awards nationally and internationally.

Leah’s recent original fibre art pieces have been juried into the Canadian Quilters’ Association National Juried Quilt Show (2018), the Houston International Quilt Festival – “ Quilts: A World of Beauty”, TX (2017,2018), the Grand National Quilt Show, Kitchener, ON (2017), and the American Quilter’s Society Quilt Weeks as follows : Spring Paducah, KY (2016, 2017 ), Grand Rapids, MI (2017,2018), Des Moines, IA (2017), Fall Paducah (2017, 2018) ,Virginia Beach, VI ( 2018 ), Daytona Beach, FL (2017,2018,2019), and Lancaster, PA (2017).

“Summer Solstice” (42.5” x 52”, 200- ¾” strips) was exhibited in Quilts=Art=Quilts, Schweinfurth Art Center, Auburn, New York, 2017.

All of her recent compositions blend ¾” strips of batiks fabrics to create original landscape designs. Each design is a unique landscape because of the selection and variety of fabrics used. Using the “quilt as you go technique” of construction allows her to create simple but dynamic original works. The design process will start with a small number of strips (62 strips to make a 20”x 16” piece). These ideas may be used to generate larger strip designs or she may develop a series of works as an example “Canola Fields”.

Her works are currently for sale at the Alberta Craft Council at www.albertacraft.ab.ca.
