About Hilary Johnstone

Hilary Johnstone I am a fabric artist living near La Ronge, northern Saskatchewan. I started out as an acrylic painter. I took my BFA and Masters of Arts in painting, and have taught art for my career. After seeing Martha Cole’s monumental “Survivors” O.S.A.C. fabric art exhibit, I switched to the friendlier media of fabric.
I like the warm, tactile, unassuming nature of fabric, the wide array of patterns and colours that are available, and the process of cutting, collaging, and sewing the shapes.
My main love is nature, wild places, and they are the subjects for my art. I love the lakes, bedrock, mosses, trees and clouds. I have responded to the extreme events of the forest fires that have raged through the forests near our community.
I exhibit each year at the Mann Art Gallery Juried Show in Prince Albert . I have an O.S.A.C. show travelling through Saskatchewan from 2017-2020.
