There is a giant crack down the middle of the Atlantic Ocean where molten lava is extruded, forcing the two sides apart over countless millennia and widening the ocean by centimeters a year. Symmetrical “stripes” with different magnetic properties parallel the central crack, but the stripes have been offset by long faults perpendicular to the stripes.  These faults can be seen clearly on topographic maps and globes, and a few volcanic islands (like Iceland and the Azores) have appeared where the lava has reached the surface of the ocean. Exhibited in FAN’s “GeoPhysical”.

Techniques: Seminole patchwork seemed a logical way to picture these geological structures,  hand applique is used for the islands and continental landmasses, while vividly coloured beading suggests the heat of molten lava in the central crack.
