About Arlene Westen
Arlene’s artistic journey is intrinsically linked to her love for creating and her innate desire to share her knowledge with others. Over 40 years, she has had the privilege of guiding numerous students, empowering them to express themselves more effectively through their art, merging technique, skill and artistic expression. The act of crafting, along with her passion for teaching, has been her lifelong catalyst for personal wellness, growth, and for forging meaningful connections.
Arlene holds a baccalaureate degree in Fibre Art (Honors) from the Alberta University of the Arts, Studio Arts degree (Honors with Great Distinction) from the University of Lethbridge, Fibre Arts diploma from Grant MacEwan University, and a Tailoring Technology certificate from NAIT.
Artist’s Statement: I am an inveterate experimenter driven by an insatiable curiosity. Having an interest in traditional textile traditions, I studied Indigo Dyeing, Katazome, Shibori, Boro and Sashiko during my time at University, and I often incorporate elements of these practices into my works.
