About Nora Ready
My textile work reflects my interest in and ongoing experimentation with botanical dyeing, ethical use of textiles, improvisational quilting, mindful stitching, gathering and foraging, and connection to place. I am a cisgender woman of Irish and British descent who is honoured to live on the West Coast – the traditional territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ people. I am constantly inspired by the land, sea and sky that nourishes me every day.
I have a daily practice of mindful stitch using small patches of fabric and what is at hand – remnants and scraps, various types of threads, garden or beach debris. I also work on larger fabric wall hangings and pieces that I mount or frame.
There are so many textile artists that I look to for techniques and to gain inspiration. These include India Flint for extensive knowledge of botanical dyeing, Alice Fox for use of gardens and natural elements in textile work, Sharon Kallis for collaborative, ecological and place based art practice, and Claire Wellesley-Smith for guidance on how stitching can be a mindful practice that aids in well being and connection to self, place and others. I also am fascinated by cultural textile practices such as the Squamish Nation’s cedar bark harvesting and weaving, the Gee Bend quilts, and Japanese sashiko stitch as examples of how textile art and craft can be practical, artful and reflective of community.
Working with fabric and stitch gives me daily pleasure and leads me down endless roads of discovery.
