Artwork by Avery Ascher

Arctic Canary

$500

This fabric artwork comments on the current vast and accelerating decreases in Arctic sea ice due to global warming caused by burning fossil fuels. It incorporates iconic northern and Arctic imagery and materials. Arctic sea ice is an essential and vital regulator of global weather systems. Northern latitudes are being impacted hardest and fastest by global warming than anywhere else in the world. Polar bear populations along Manitoba's Hudson Bay coast are already severely stressed due to decreasing periods of ice cover during which they can hunt. They are the 'canary' in the global climate change coal mine.
