EBB & FLOW:

Seven variations of time worn woolen blankets joined by hand in a contemporary adaptation of the Japanese Sashiko stitch, dyed in Indigo and rippled with tension give a meditative quality to this work. The term Seven Seas was first used around 2,000BC and referred to all the seas and oceans in the world. There are seven colours in the rainbow, seven Christian virtues, and the number seven is considered a mystic number ruled by the planet Neptune and the Moon.

The Ebb and Flow of the oceans tides, the decrease followed by the increase in the water are the feelings I wanted to create in this vast sense of place. I believe if you listen intently to the work; the ebb and flow of the oceans sounds will reach your ears.

In my current work Blanket Statement: No Shame in Patches, I strive to show the connection we have to our everyday life, past, present and future through the age old traditional ”woman‘s‘ work” of mending, darning and patching. This body of work depicts birth, death, family and the ever vigilant sentinels or totems that we identify with.
Ebb & Flow is an important piece in this series and like the colour blue it fills the viewer with as sense of inspiration, sincerity and spirituality; it allows us to look beyond.
