From Away

Our circles of friendship inevitably break apart, and then recombine to include those still close to home, those close to our hearts though separated by time or distance, and those "from away" who gradually become important in our lives.
This quilt was built from the remains of a previous project that used symmetrical circles of 'paper-doll' cutouts to represent seven sisters and their niece. When the cutouts were removed, evocative negative shapes were left behind. To me, these shapes suggested both longing and connection, especially when recombined to signify our changing relationships with far-flung family and friends.
