In the midst of the temperate rainforests of the British Columbia coast, a rare white Kermode bear, also known as Spirit Bear or Ghost Bear, exists--a symbol of peace and harmony to the native peoples of the region. The Spirit Bear is a rare black bear that has white fur caused by a recessive gene. It is estimated that there are fewer than 1,000 Spirit Bears in existance. I have tried to capture the ghostly appearance of the bear by using Angelina™ fibres and have incorporated a Haida-inspired design by using the precise lines and contrasting colours of this native art. Out of culture respect, this artwork has been displayed with the permission of a local elder.
