Swimming at Night

16x20 inches

This piece is an homage to the deep, quiet holiness of water and to the shoreline places that shape our memories. Composed of bands of shifting blues, greys, and greens, the work evokes the layered language of Lake Winnipeg—its horizon lines, its weather, and the rhythmic pull between sky and water.

Along the lower portion of the work, script emerges like whispers beneath the surface. These lines name familiar places and activities from Victoria Beach, Manitoba—paths walked, waters entered, rituals repeated over generations. For those who know the area, these words carry the warmth of recognition; for those who don’t, they offer a glimpse into how deeply a landscape can root itself within a community.

I created this piece as a meditation on the sacredness of water as both geography and memory. Here, water is not only a place we go, but a place that holds us—reflecting our histories, renewing our spirit, and reminding us that the everyday rituals of shoreline life are themselves acts of reverence.
