Karlie Norrish McChesney
About Karlie Norrish McChesney
Numbers, measuring, arithmetic, and formulas are the foundational tools of Karlie Norrish McChesney’s mixed medium art. Right out of high school Karlie worked as a draftsperson in an architectural engineering firm before pursuing her BEd and MEd in Studio Art Practices. Retired from her 30-year teaching career, she now pursues the arts fulltime. Karlie’s studio is located in Chilliwack; she exhibits her work in BC, across Canada, and the US.
Angles of perspective and structural form fascinate me. All things mathematical are my inspiration. I love to solve puzzles especially those with 3D shape; for example, making origami modulars. My preferred medium is fibre in the form of stitched textiles that hang on the wall; however, there is often an element of mixed media applied to the surface and/or standing as an installation accompanying the 2D artwork.
The work requires much measuring, calculating and arranging of colour, so the making of my art is also a form of puzzle solving. I use computer software in conjunction with hand drafting to plan the work. The final pieces are constructed primarily in textiles, which are surface painted; and accompanied often with a mixed media addition of paint, paper, plastic, metal, clay, and/or wood.
Sculptured artwork also has a place in my art practice as I am drawn to working with many different materials and structural form. Much of this work is in the form of a non-functional vessel.
