After arriving from Ontario to live on Vancouver Island ( Victoria) I started taking Art History classes at UVIC on First Nations Art with Professor Kerry Mason. It was amazing to learn how different the West Coast Native art was from the Woodlands First Nations from Ontario. When we were studying totem poles and their meaning and stories it hit me about how similar this was to my Scottish heritage. Each ethnicity had symbols, stories and mottos relating to the family or clan. Thus I created this "totem" or maybe " family tree " with the symbols  and mottos, plus photos of our family just going back to our grandparents. I used tartan textiles instead of a cedar tree! I printed the photos onto cotton. The leaves are painted tyvek. Also did machine and hand stitching.
