Formerly green pine forests of Pacific West suffer extensive damage by the pine beetles. The fungus introduced into the tree on the mandibles of the mountain pine beetles stains the sapwood bluish-grey. Pine trees, literally starved to death by the fungus and dried up, are ready fuels for forest fires. Salvaged logs are a prized material for wood craftsmen. Piecing, applique, machine quilting.
