Fresh, potable water is essential for survival. Our society pollutes water in two main ways. We produce ‘Grey water’ which contains residues and soils from washing processes. This type of contaminant is removed by natural filtering through soil, gravel, and sand, after which grey water returns to the world’s store of fresh water. The second type of pollution is ‘Black water’, which contains bacteria, carcinogens and pathogens introduced through sewage, animal waste, and industrial/chemical processes. Black water requires complex purification systems before it returns to the fresh water system: removal of solids through settling and filtration, bacterial digestion, and further filtering.

Refreshing portrays the cycle of water use and reclamation in a responsible society. Water is renewable and is a precious legacy for future generations. We have a responsibility to leave it cleaner than we found it.
